Snow Molds

Areas that look like the images in these photos are infected with snow mold.

How did I get this?

Some areas of your yard stay covered with snow. This permits a cold environment where fungi are thriving in the early spring.

Susceptible areas are located in shaded or wet areas where the ground is thawing and the snow remains.

Often, areas that are infected will have leaves or debris that was not removed late in the fall.

This fungi usually causes the roots of the grass to decay..

Text Box: Did you Know? How to manage snow mold.
Breakup the matted grass with a rake and clean up all leaves/debris that are covering the lawn.
Add Lime to the infected areas at a rate of 50 lbs per 1,000 sq ft.
Spray areas with a Ivory dish washing liquid and Hydrogen peroxide using a hose end sprayer.  Mix 50/50 Ivory/Peroxide and soak areas
Fertilize with only organic fertilizers.
If all this fails to get the lawn to green up then you will have to seed. (see lawn renovation)
