Lawns Make Oxygen

Grass- The environmental hero?

625 square feet of grass provides 1 person with 1 day of Oxygen

20,000 square feet of grass has the cooling effect of a 70 ton air conditioner.

Water quality – Turf grass reduces runoff and filters water before it enters our groundwater

supplies.

Particulate entrapment. Turf grasses trap an estimated 12 million tons of dust and dirt released

annually into the atmosphere.

Allergy control. Turf controls dust, in addition to pollen from plants that can cause serious

health problems for some individuals.

Pollutant absorption. Turf grasses absorb gaseous pollutants such as carbon dioxide and

sulfur dioxide, converting them to oxygen.

According to EPA's publication Healthy Lawn, Healthy Environment, Healthy grass provides

a feeding ground for birds, who find it a rich source of insects, worms, and other food. Thick

grass prevents soil erosion, filters contaminants from rainwater, and absorbs many types of

airborne pollutants, like dust and soot. Grass is also highly efficient at converting carbon

dioxide to oxygen, a process that helps clean the air.
