Lawn Renovation

Many lawns have compacted soil, which restricts water and air movement through the soil. Annual core aeration removes plugs to break through compacted soil to prevent thatch layers from growing and choking out the lawn. Aeration is one of the best "extras" you can do to maintain high quality, healthy turf.

Aeration provides many benefits including:

Helping roots penetrate deeper into the soil.

Opening compact soil allowing more water and oxygen to get to plant roots.

Making fertilization more efficient.

Speeding thatch decomposition.

Do’s and Don’ts of proper lawn renovation.

1st do not de-thatch.  Why? Most lawns do not need it.  De-thatching causes extreme injury to the grass shoots and upper root area.  The only time to consider de-thatching is when you can stand on the tips of your toes – drop to your heels and have a slight bounce back.  Then you have enough debris to do a “light” de-thatching job.

The proper steps to a quality lawn renovation are:

· Core aerate

· Adjust soil pH if necessary (a quick visual test is to see if moss is present or if the grass is very thin and bumpy)

· Over seed with a combination of grasses suitable for your area.

· Fertilize with Organic Fertilizer.

· Topdressing with compost

Text Box: Did you know?
Most soils are so compacted that grass roots can only grow a few inches deep and that soils that are in proper condition will have roots growing as deep as 10”.
